The Verbal and Visual Vomit of Andy Orsow

The Fixie is Dead

Because i'm starting the Coastie revolution. Just as fresh, just as clean(no cables, brakes, derailleurs etc.), minus the fixed hub plus a coaster brake—you know, the kind you had when you were a kid? where you push back on your pedals and it starts to brake?
I'm picking up my rear wheel today, its going to be the dopeness.
still have to set up my cranks and and make my whole single speed chainwheel deal or whatever.
but thanks to the recent beautiful weather i finally got to put the finish on my frame. there are some discreppancies here and there but all in all the effect is pretty good. esp. for masking most everything off with duct tape.
Obviously i stripped my handlebars of everything, they looked like crap so i buffed them up with some steel wool and it made all the difference in the world.

the question is, to wrap or not to wrap?
So far this has been a really fun project and its nice to see it finally coming together.

Cheers!

Some Days I feel like i'm walking the tight rope of cultural sanity.

some days i feel like i am walking the tight rope of cultural sanity.
right below me, instead of a long and potentially fatal drop,
is a sea of frustration and confusion, to fall in would be to grab the shoulders of our people and shake, shake as hard as i can and scream
"what are we doing!?"
I don't care about your status update.
I don't want to follow you.
I don't care about your lame survey that you posted on myspace because
"you had nothing better to do" when really you just want someone to care. Someone to take interest in you, and the things you like,
how you feel and what you think.
someone to make you feel valid, and of worth.
I want us to all step outside and have a cup of coffee/tea with our neighbors.
Shake the hand of a stranger and do right by ourselves.
To stop worrying about what we should do and take action
to get one step closer to realizing our dreams. I am a romantic, and I am young.
I am also, a very skilled and gifted funambulist*.

*One who practices the art of walking along a thin wire or rope usually at great height.

Old books - good people.

Today I went to visit my long time friend, teacher and mentor Craig Honeycutt, who is a local artist and southern oregon native. I took lessons from him for about 4-5 years on and off throughout middle and high school. I don't take lessons anymore but we do get together often and talk about life, art and creativity. I urge you to check out his site (click his name!), he has alot of awesome work. Anyhow i walked away with some great books on design and typography he had lying around. thought i'd shoot some pictures - its important in my position that i be my own professor and learn as much as possible. and damn nothing is as good as good typography. Now i have to stop typing and eat. thanks for looking!

Flyer Update!

(if you want to see the original concept check out the post before this.)

Finished! -ish.
i made a 8x11 and an 11x17 version.
this is the 11x17 and i like it the most.
I used to find making flyers for my band a pain in the ass - now i look at it as a valuable learning opprotunity and a chance to grow my portfolio.
just goes to show how changing the context of a project in your head can absolutely change the quality and the outcome.
i'm loving these brushes a whole bunch. very useful if you don't want to overload on the grunge while still having some nice details. i used them for the cloud-ish section at the top.
thanks for looking!
